Essential Oils for Cough and Congestion Relief

Do you have the month-long cold that is going around? The cough that never ends? Using essential oils can be an added helpful benefit with congestion relief without the side effect of prescriptions and OTC medications. These essential oils can be combined in a diffuser, or using the homemade shower melt recipe below.

10 drops Eucalyptus

7 drops Peppermint

5 drops Tea Tree

Another essential oil to add is Oregano. Oregano is a powerful antiviral oil that can help with congestion. It mostly helps with upper respiratory ailments. Oregano is great for mixing and matching with other essential oils. Some combinations include oregano and peppermint, and oregano and eucalyptus.

Essential Oil Shower Melt

What you need

  • 1 cup corn starch
  • ½ cup baking soda
  • 10 drops Peppermint oil
  • 10 drops Eucalyptus
  • Large bowl & whisk
  • Silicone cube tray
  • Spray bottle with water

Method

  1. In a large bowl, dump in and whisk the corn starch, baking soda, eucalyptus and peppermint oil.
  2. Get the spray bottle and start spritzing water into the bowl. While spritzing, mix the powder with a spoon.
  3. Make sure not to add a lot of water: just enough to get the ingredients to form a shape without falling apart.
  4. Now stuff the little molds you’ve gathered into a silicone cube tray and leave it to set for an hour or two in the refrigerator.
  5. Once set, carefully remove from the silicone tray and store in a large mason jar.
  6. To use, toss one on the shower floor near the drain. The heat and pressure of the shower will melt the shower melt, releasing the refreshing scent of peppermint and eucalyptus into the air.

Headaches & Migraines

I’m not sure what it is, but every time the weather changes dramatically here in Colorado I get a headache. It was 18 degrees yesterday and 51 degrees today. Quite the warm up! So this morning I had a screaming headache. Since it was the first thing in the morning I couldn’t take any pain relievers……it upsets my stomach. So, I grabbed my roller bottle of  Rocky Mountain Oils “Migraine Support”

I add about 10-20 drops of this blend into a roll on bottle with Witch Hazel , and dab it onto my temples and behind my ears. It really does soothe the throbbing. You can also use a carrier oil like jojoba, or almond oil in your roller bottle.
