Essential Oil Substitutes for Lavender

Lavender has become very popular and you will find it in lotions, soaps, shampoos, and even bedding! It has been called “the universal balm” by aromatherapist due to its use for anxiety, promoting peaceful sleep, and antibacterial and antifungal properties. Sometimes, Lavender is not the best choice of essential oil, you may be allergic to it, or just tired of it.

The following essential oils are great alternatives.

Neroli: It is very expensive, which is why it is usually sold diluted. It is still very effective this way. The orange blossom scent is great for all skin types. It works as a natural deodorant and can be used on dehydrated or sensitive skin. Diffuse Neroli to help calm the mind and spirit while bringing inner strength and peace.

Geranium: This is especially good for use with kids, because it seldom irritates, is light and pleasant, and very calming. It has many of the same properties as Lavender, so it is good to alternate with lavender for consistent results. The oil is gentle enough for daily skin care use. Geranium oil also offers emotional comfort.  Citrusy oils blend well with Geranium Essential Oil.

Bergamont: This is good medicine for a busy brain. It is also a light, uplifting citrus fragrance. Bergamot and Geranium smell wonderful combined. Be careful of sun exposure immediately after using it on your skin, as Bergamot is phototoxic.

Ylang Ylang: This oil, often used in perfumes, should be used sparingly as a little goes a long way. Diffuse the oil alone or in a blend to help bring harmony to your life, along with feelings of peace. The balancing oil complements meditation and also can be used in daily skin care products, including soaps and detergents.
Aromatherapy oils are not meant to be used undiluted on the skin. If you are going to use it on your body, try it in a carrier such as almond or jojoba oil, and test it before using it extensively.
